Do you drink alone or start early in the day? Contrary to a common misconception, you do not usually get alcoholics down the pub. They usually prefer to drink on their own. Sure, they may go to the pub as well but isolating and a lack of social contact are often characteristics of an alcoholic. ![]() Measuring your intake of alcohol may show you how bad your problem is. Unfortunately, many advice services, including the NHS, seriously underestimate the number of units in beer, cider, wine, spirits, etc. You should, as a rough guide, take a glass of wine as 3.5 units, a bottle of wine as 11 units, a pint of beer or lager as 3 units, a glass of spirit as 2 units and a 70cl bottle of spirits as 30 units (a litre is 40 units). You are damaging your health if you regularly drink more than 14 units for a woman and 21 units for a man PER WEEK! That is just two bottles of wine, 7 pints of beer, half a bottle of whisky or Vodka for a man and a lot less for a woman. Do these amounts seem silly or ridiculously low? Well these limits are laid down by the World Health Organisation and you exceed them at your peril. Most alcoholics, however, drink these amounts every day. But it is not the amount of alcohol though that decides whether you are an alcoholic; it is the effect alcohol is having on your lifestyle, health, friends and relatives.
